How to Download and Play Yamaha XG MIDI Files on Windows 10
If you are a fan of Yamaha XG MIDI files, you might be wondering how to play them on your Windows 10 computer. Yamaha XG is a standard for MIDI sound modules that extends the General MIDI (GM) standard with more sounds, effects and controllers. Yamaha XG MIDI files are compatible with Yamaha XG devices and modules, such as the MU series, but they can also be played on any computer with a software synthesizer that supports XG.
In this article, we will show you how to download and play Yamaha XG MIDI files on Windows 10 using a free MIDI player and a virtual XG instrument. You will need the following:
A Windows 10 computer with a sound card and speakers or headphones.
A free MIDI player software that can load Soundfonts and VST instruments, such as Falcosoft Soundfont Midi Player.
A virtual XG instrument that emulates the Yamaha XG sound module, such as S-YXG50 or S-YXG2006LE.
Some Yamaha XG MIDI files that you want to play. You can find some free sample MIDI files for Yamaha GM and XG keyboards here[^3^].
Follow these steps to download and play Yamaha XG MIDI files on Windows 10:
Download Falcosoft Soundfont Midi Player from here[^1^]. You can choose to download it with or without a GM/GS Soundfont included in the package. For this guide, we choose the version without any Soundfont. The software has no installer, so you just have to uncompress it in a folder of your choice.
Download the VSTi version of S-YXG50 and S-YXG2006LE from here[^2^]. Make sure to uncompress the folder \"YamahaVsti\" into the Falcosoft Soundfont Midi Player VST folder, usually located at MidiPlayer5 > VST. Please note: these VST Instruments are 32-bit only. Make sure to use them with the 32-bit version of the player. If you want to use the 64-bit version, you will need a software called Jbridge to convert the VST Instruments into a 64-bit plugin.
Run Falcosoft Soundfount Midi Player and go to the Midi Player Device Settings by clicking on the gear icon. Check the box labeled \"Use Bass (Soundfonts/VSTi)\" and close the window.
Click on the menu icon, and select the first option \"Bass VST (i) Plugins\", then click on the last option VST Instrument. Once the new window opens, click on the \"File\" button in order to locate a VST file, you should point it to the directory on Step 02, and choose between S-YXG50.dll and S-YXG2006LE.dll. Once the dll file is loaded, you should initialize the VST by clicking on the \"Play\" button, which is to the right of the \"File\" button.
You can now open any Midi file using the folder icon, or simply by dragging any Midi file from your desktop or folder into Falcosoft Soundfount Midi Player, you should see it being added to the playlist. To start the playback simply click the play button or double-click on the file name in the playlist.
Congratulations! You have successfully downloaded and played Yamaha XG MIDI files on Windows 10. You can also record the Midi to WAV using the record button. By clicking on the record button, you can decide between different recording modes. For more info about this player, please check the documentation of the midi player here[^4^]. Have fun! 248dff8e21
